What to wear to a Cuban salsa class?

Dressing for a salsa class means finding a balance between comfort, practicality and style.

Salsa being an energetic Latin dance, you need an outfit that gives you freedom of movement without making you sweat from the very first minute… and why not add a festive touch to reflect the atmosphere of the dance?

Here are a few tips for choosing your outfit for a salsa class, Cuban or Puerto Rican. 🕺🏼💃🏼

Choosing your top

Let’s look at which tops to wear for women and men.

For women:

Go for fitted but comfortable tops.

Sleeveless tops or thin-strap tank tops are popular because they allow great freedom of arm movement. Breathable fabrics such as cotton or synthetic blends are ideal for staying cool.

Long, loose sleeves can get in the way of the dancers’ hand holds, or the followers’, especially if they cover the hands.

For men:

Light shirts, such as linen or cotton shirts, are a good choice.

A Nike golf polo or a breathable T-shirt designed for sport works very well.

Some prefer short-sleeved shirts or fitted T-shirts for better ease of movement.

Be careful: men often sweat much more than women, and that isn’t very pleasant in social dancing. Between the dampness and the potential smell, bring a top just for your dance class – clean and dry. A quick spray of deodorant is a must!

Choosing your bottoms

To go with your top and move freely, choosing the right bottoms is important.

For women:

Skirts and dresses are often worn for salsa, but they shouldn’t be too long or too tight, so they don’t restrict your movements.

Fitted dance trousers, stretch jeans or leggings are a very good choice: you need to be comfortable.

For men:

Dance trousers or light trousers are fine.

Avoid tight jeans or anything that restricts leg movement.

Go for chinos, cargo trousers, smart joggers or soft jeans.

Shoes

Salsa is walked (“caminar”), so the right shoes really matter.

Crucially important:

Shoes are perhaps the most important part of your salsa outfit.

They must be comfortable and allow quick, fluid foot movements. Not all floors are “slippery” enough, and if on top of that the soles of your shoes grip a lot, it will be bad for your dancing and for your knee joints.

If you have dance shoes, they’re a good choice IF you dance indoors, on wooden floors or tiles.

🇨🇺 In Cuba, and in general, people dance salsa in trainers! 👟

For women:

Heeled dance shoes aren’t the most common type of shoe in Cuban salsa.

If you have flat or heeled dance shoes, that’s fine, as long as the floor is suitable so you don’t damage them.

Otherwise, in Cuban salsa everyone dances in trainers!

Ideally you should be able to glide easily on the dance floor while staying in control of your slides and movements.

For men:

Latin dance shoes for men are usually lace-up shoes with a suede sole.

Failing that, and for all surfaces, we recommend trainers! Sports shoes with a smooth sole work well.

Accessories

To complete your outfit without getting in the way of the dance, accessories can add a touch of style. If you don’t wear any, at least there’s no question to ask.

Jewellery:

Keep jewellery to a minimum.

Simple earrings or a small necklace can complete your outfit without getting in the way.

Lots of bracelets can get in the way of the follower’s (man or woman) hand hold.

Hair:

Make sure your hair is out of your face.

Ponytails, buns or bandanas can be both practical and elegant.

Long braids may sometimes whip your partner’s face – it doesn’t hurt, though, and makes for a good laugh!

The famous towel:

Men who know they sweat easily bring a small towel (a hand towel, for example), which they hang from a pocket to wipe themselves between dances – a nice gesture for their partners.

Outfit according to your level

The more of a beginner you are, the more you should prioritise comfort and freedom of movement.

Beginners:

If you’re just starting out, go for comfort and don’t worry too much about looks.

A T-shirt and yoga pants or leggings with comfortable shoes (trainers) are enough.

Intermediate and advanced:

As you gain confidence, you can experiment with bolder, more stylish outfits, always keeping in mind the importance of comfort and freedom of movement.

The importance of comfort and practicality

Comfort should always be your priority.

An uncomfortable outfit can not only bother you while dancing, but also affect your confidence and your ability to concentrate on learning the moves.

Make sure your outfit doesn’t restrict your movements, especially hip movements and turns, which are common in salsa.

Adapting to the temperature

Salsa classes can be physical, energetic and make you sweat. 🌡️

Plan clothes that breathe well (Nike Dri-FIT or other breathable sportswear) and can keep you cool.

After a day at work, the ideal for your partner is a dry, clean top you haven’t worn all day. It limits or avoids the day’s sweat. A quick spray of deodorant and you’re done – everyone’s happy.

In cooler environments, think about bringing a light jacket or jumper you can easily take off once you’ve warmed up.

Expressing your personal style

Salsa is an expressive dance, so don’t hesitate to show your personality through your outfit.

Whether with bright colours, bold patterns or unique accessories, your outfit can reflect your own style.

However, avoid overly extravagant clothes – it isn’t Fashion Week either.

Outfits for performances

If you’re preparing for a salsa performance, your outfit can be more “extravagant” and theatrical, with sequins, bright colours and bolder accessories.

For performances, professional dance shoes are essential to ensure both style and practicality.

Respecting other dancers

In salsa, Cuban, Puerto Rican and so on, there is often a lot of physical contact.

So make sure your outfit is appropriate and doesn’t make your partners uncomfortable.

Simplicity and comfort are the key words

In short, choosing an outfit for a salsa class is a combination of comfort, practicality and personal expression.

It’s important to choose clothes that let you move freely and feel confident, while respecting the atmosphere and etiquette of salsa.

Casual clothes and sportswear are ideal. T-shirt/top, trousers/jeans and Adidas Stan Smith-style trainers is a classic, very effective combo! 👟👖👕

With these tips, you’ll be ready to shine on the dance floor.
