What to wear to dance bachata?

Dressing appropriately matters in dance. Since bachata movements are fluid, there is contact between partners and the connection is very strong, the outfit and accessories of the dancer – beginner or professional – need to be suitable.

You need to be free to move while keeping a little touch of sensuality. Developments in bachata, such as sensual bachata, have introduced more dynamic and acrobatic elements, which call for some extra thought when choosing an outfit so you can perform these new moves freely.

As we explained in a previous article on the history of bachata, this Latin and tropical dance, blending African, European and indigenous musical influences, was created in the 1960s.

Initially seen as working-class music, it was often marginalised. Over time, however, it gained popularity and respect, evolving into a much-loved dance on the international scene.

What should a woman wear to dance bachata?

As a woman, your outfit should be comfortable, practical and stylish. Here are a few ideas to consider:

Dresses and skirts:

  • Dresses: fitted but stretchy dresses are a good choice. In any case, they must give you enough freedom for hip and leg movements. Lengths vary, but a midi dress is often a popular choice, striking a balance between elegance and practicality.
  • Skirts: skirts that follow your figure without restricting movement are recommended. Pencil skirts with some stretch, or flowing, flared skirts are a good choice.

This is too much:

Shoes:

  • Comfort and support: go for Latin dance shoes if you like, but trainers that don’t grip the floor too much will do just fine. You need to be comfortable.
  • Heel height: heels accentuate posture and movement in the dance, as long as you’re comfortable in them. They’re not the norm in bachata – trainers are life! 👟

Accessories:

  • Jewellery: jewellery can complement your outfit nicely, but avoid big pieces that can get caught during the dance. Less is best!
  • Hair and make-up: as long as your hair doesn’t fall in front of your face and get in your way, choose whatever hairstyle you like. Long braids can also bother your partner and get pulled during the lead. Make-up is up to you – feel free.

Outfits for men

Men need to find a balance between style, comfort and practicality. Here are a few useful tips.

Shirt, trousers and shoes:

  • Shirt: go for classic or slim-fit shirts that aren’t restrictive. Linen or cotton are ideal to avoid or limit sweating. Bachata is a social dance, so wear a clean or fresh shirt. If you’re coming straight from work, change before the party or dance class.
  • Trousers: trousers should be comfortable and give you good freedom of movement. Chinos, or jeans as long as they don’t restrict your movements, are good choices. Skinny jeans are only okay if they have at least some stretch.
  • Shoes: as for women, you need to be comfortable. Dance shoes are great (depending on the venue’s floor), but trainers that don’t grip the floor too much are perfect and the most common choice. Leather shoes work well, as long as you can at least slide on the floor. 👟

Accessories

  • Belt: it can add a touch of elegance to your outfit. Again, as long as it doesn’t restrict movement, go for it!
  • Watches and bracelets: if you wear them, make sure they fit snugly so they don’t interfere with the dance.

The importance of comfort and mobility

As we explained for salsa, your outfit should first and foremost be practical and comfortable.

Breathable fabrics should always be preferred in social dancing, as they limit or prevent excessive sweating, which makes contact less pleasant for your dance partner.

Remember to wear a top just for the party or class. If you’ve spent a working day in your top, depending on how much you sweat and your body odour, we recommend changing it. A quick wash of the underarms, some deodorant or even a little perfume and you’re good to go!

Finally, as you’ve understood, your outfit must not get in the way of the dance in any way. Hands shouldn’t get caught in strings, straps, etc., and bracelets shouldn’t snag or get in the way of holds and leads.

What should you wear to dance bachata?

What to wear for bachata? Well, as for salsa: something comfortable!

Then it should let you move freely and show off a style that reflects who you are. You can go for elegance, but jeans + top + trainers is a trio that always works. 👕👖👟

Quite a few women opt for leggings, always very pleasant for social dancing.
